Grok Translate in Chat

There is no separate Grok Translate product. You paste text into Grok chat and ask for a translation. Voice mode is a different feature.

Updated 2026-09-25

Grok translate is a job you give the chat model, not an app in the store with that title. Open grok.com, paste the source text, name the target language, and say what must not change. That last clause is the difference between a useful translation and a paraphrase that drops a date.

A prompt that holds still

Use a short instruction in front of the text: “Translate into Spanish. Keep names, URLs, and numbers unchanged. If a sentence is ambiguous, translate both readings.” Paste the source after a blank line. For a file, attach it with Grok files instead of photographing a screen. Ask for the translation only, not a summary, unless you want both and you label them.

Grok can handle ordinary prose, support mail, and technical docs well enough to draft. It is a weak notary. Do not ship a contract, a medical instruction, or a visa letter on a model draft alone. Have a person who knows the target language read it. The model will not flag every false friend. Numbers and proper nouns are the items to diff yourself, because those are the errors that cost money.

What this is not

  • It is not voice mode. Voice speaks an answer. Translation writes one.
  • It is not a website translator that rewrites every page you visit. A browser extension that claims to do that is covered under extensions.
  • It is not unlimited. Long documents spend the chat allowance.
  • It does not grant rights to the source text. Translate material you are allowed to copy.

Languages and UI

The chat can translate between many languages because it is a general model, not because xAI published a language matrix you should memorize. If a language comes back thin or script-broken, say so and ask for another pass, or use a dedicated translation tool for that pair. The Grok interface itself may not be localized into the language you are translating. That is a product-language limit, not a model limit. Descargar grok and similar queries are download intent, handled in the download guide, not translation jobs.

For terminology, give a two-column glossary in the prompt: “Render ‘SuperGrok’ unchanged. Render ‘rate limit’ as your usual legal term for a usage cap, and keep it consistent.” Models drift synonyms across a long document unless you forbid the drift. On a second pass, ask it to list any sentence it was unsure about. That list is more useful than a confidence percentage it invented.

A second pass that catches the expensive mistakes

After the first translation, ask for a list of names, numbers, and URLs in the source and in the draft. Diff that list yourself. Models drop a zero, translate a product name, or “fix” a URL. Those three errors survive a fluent paragraph. Then ask which sentences had two plausible readings. Keep both if the audience needs the ambiguity. Delete the model’s commentary before you send the text.

Long files should be split by section, not shoved in as one blob that hits the limit halfway through a clause. Translate a section, check the glossary, then continue in the same thread so terms stay stable. If the thread gets muddy, paste the glossary again at the top of the next section. SuperGrok raises the chat cap. It does not hire a reviewer. Budget a person for any text that can cost money if it is wrong.

Voice is the wrong review tool. Hearing a translation hides spelling. Use voice mode only when you want to know how a sentence sounds, and keep the written draft as the version you send. For UI strings, ask the model to respect a character limit and then count the characters yourself. It will claim it did.

If you are translating instructions for Grok itself, such as a skill for a bilingual repo, keep the commands in the source language. Translate the comments. A translated shell command is a broken command. The same split applies to API field names from docs.x.ai. Leave the JSON keys alone.

For a bilingual glossary, keep a two-column note outside the chat: source term, chosen translation, do-not-use synonym. Paste it back when you start a new thread. The model will not remember a preference forever, and a new thread is the right call when the old one fills with rejected variants. If you collaborate, the glossary belongs in the repo or the doc, not only in your Grok history. A teammate without your login cannot see the thread. They can see the file. Translate the glossary labels. Do not translate identifiers, SKUs, or the word SuperGrok unless the audience needs an explanation in parentheses beside the unchanged name.

When the source itself is wrong, translation will preserve the mistake in fluent language. Flag the source error in a comment instead of silently repairing it. A repaired number looks authoritative and is harder to catch than a rough sentence. That is the main risk of using a strong model on a weak original. For a public page, run the translation through a native reader even when the glossary matched. Fluency is not accuracy, and accuracy is the only reason to do the second pass.

Questions

Does Grok have a translator?

Not as a separate product. Paste text into Grok chat and name the target language. Keep names, URLs, and numbers unchanged.

Can I translate a PDF with Grok?

Attach the file in chat if the picker accepts it, then ask for a translation. Check numbers and names before you send the result to anyone.

Is Grok Translate the same as voice mode?

No. Voice mode speaks replies. Translation is a written chat request. Voice is listed on the free plan. Both can hit usage limits.

Should I use Grok for a legal translation?

Only as a draft. A person who knows the target language should review contracts, medical text, and immigration papers.

  • Grok Text to Speech and Voice

Grok voice mode speaks replies and is listed on the free plan. It is not a studio text-to-speech library with published voice IDs.

  • Grok Files, Connectors, and Skills

Grok files are chat uploads. Connectors link outside accounts and ship on the free plan. Skills are reusable instructions, especially in Grok Build.

  • Grok Limits on Free and Imagine

Free Grok has rate limits on chat, images, and video. Paid SuperGrok plans raise them. Here is what the caps cover and what they do not.

  • Grok Download for Windows and Android

xAI ships Grok on the web, iOS, and Android. Windows uses the browser. Avoid unofficial APK files. The CLI install is a separate tool.
