Grok video, grok AI video, grok video generator, and grok AI video generator are the same product surface: Imagine. On the web it is at grok.com/imagine. On the phone it is inside the Grok app. You describe a shot, or you upload a still and describe the motion. The current consumer fast model and the API model grok-imagine-video-1.5 are xAI’s own documentation, not a third-party wrapper.
“Sound effects, ambience, and dialogue are generated in the same pass and land on the action.”
Text to video and image to video
Text-to-video starts from the prompt. On grok-imagine-video-1.5, xAI says the system first makes a still, then animates it, and you still send one request. The intermediate still is not returned. Image-to-video uses your picture as the opening frame, then adds motion, camera move, and sound. That is the path behind grok AI image to video, grok imagine image to video, and grok animate image. Can Grok make videos, can Grok generate videos, and can Grok create videos are all yes, inside the length and plan limits below.
How to use Grok Imagine: sign in, open Imagine, choose video, write a concrete shot (subject, motion, camera), and set duration if the control is visible. For a still you already made, switch to image-to-video and attach the file. Keep the source image one you have rights to use. The tool does not clear a copyright problem because the output moves.
Length, resolution, and speed
The Imagine API documents clips up to 15 seconds, at 480p, 720p, or 1080p, with aspect ratios that include 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2, and 2:3. Native 1080p on grok-imagine-video-1.5 applies to text-to-video and image-to-video. Reference-to-video, which guides a clip with extra images without forcing the first frame, is capped at 720p and is documented on grok-imagine-video, not on the 1.5 model. Video editing takes a source clip up to about 8.7 seconds plus a text instruction.
xAI’s 1.5 announcement says Video 1.5 Fast on grok.com and the mobile apps produces a 6-second 720p video in about 25 seconds, down from more than 40 seconds on the previous model. That is a generation-time figure, not a promise for every prompt. A crowded server or a longer duration will take more.
- API output price for grok-imagine-video-1.5: $0.08 per second, so 10 seconds is $0.80 before any extra the docs attach to resolution.
- Consumer SuperGrok Plus ($100 a month) is the plan that names 1080p video on x.ai/pricing.
- SuperGrok Lite was reported at $10 a month with 480p and a six-second cap (Economic Times, March 2026).
- SuperGrok at $30 a month includes image and video generation with higher limits than free, not an automatic 1080p label.
Free and “unlimited” video
Grok AI video generator free, grok video generator free, grok imagine free, is grok imagine free, and grok AI video generator free unlimited need a split answer. You can open Imagine on a free account and the product will tell you if a clip is included. The allowance is small and it runs out. Unlimited free video is not a plan. There is no coupon that sets the API’s $0.08 per second to zero. When the consumer meter stops you, the choices are to wait or to move up a plan. Read the exact notice so you do not buy Plus when you only needed to wait for a daily reset. Limits covers that distinction.
Editing a clip
Can Grok edit videos: yes, in the documented edit flow. You supply a short source and a text change. The docs say the rest of the scene is meant to hold. You can chain edits by feeding an output back in. This is not a full timeline editor with tracks, titles, and a color grade. It is a model edit. For stills, use the image guide. Grok edit as a bare search usually means that still workflow, not the video one.
Imagine 1.0, agents, and the library
Grok Imagine 1.0 is an older label searchers still use. The shipping video model to name in API calls is grok-imagine-video-1.5. Aliases on the model card include grok-imagine-video-1.5-preview and a May 2026 dated snapshot. The 1.5 announcement also describes parallel Imagine agents so several prompts can run at once, and library search so you can find a clip without scrolling. Those are product features inside Imagine, not a separate subscription.
Custom agents in Imagine (the low-volume “grok custom agents” query) are that parallel-agent control, plus any agent you define for a project. They are not Grok Build, which is the coding CLI. If your goal is a repository, leave Imagine and install the CLI. If your goal is a clip, stay here.
Before you spend a paid generation, write the shot in one sentence and name the duration you actually need. A six-second clip is the length xAI used when it quoted a 25-second render for 720p on Video 1.5 Fast. Asking for 15 seconds because the API allows it will cost more on the API ($0.08 a second is $1.20 at 15 seconds) and may not be offered on your consumer tier. Match the request to the plan you already checked on the price page.
