Grok Limits on Free and Imagine

Grok limits, grok limit, grok image limit, grok image generation limit, and grok usage limits are the same family of question: why did a reply, a picture, or a clip stop. The free plan on x.ai/pricing is described as access “within generous limits.” SuperGrok advertises higher rate limits across features. SuperGrok Plus advertises significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice, and Build. None of those sentences is a quota table.

Chat limits

A chat limit can show up as a wait, a shorter context, or a prompt to upgrade. It is separate from the content filter. If the model refuses a topic, that is a policy block, not a quota. If the composer says you have used the allowance, that is a quota. Waiting until the window resets is the free-tier path. Subscribing is the paid path. Creating extra accounts to dodge the meter is outside the product terms and tends to get the new account limited too.

SuperGrok Lite, in the March 2026 Economic Times report, lengthens chat sessions to about twice the free tier and still counts as a limited plan. Heavy is the high end. “Supergrok limits” therefore depends on which column you bought. Check the plan name on the billing screen before you compare your cap with someone on a different tier.

Image limits

Grok image generation limit is an Imagine cap, not a chat cap. You can still have free chat messages and be out of images, or the reverse. Image generation on the consumer plans is listed under SuperGrok and above. The free column on the pricing page we checked highlights search, voice, and connectors, and does not promise a large image allowance. When people search grok image free, the accurate answer is: try it, and expect a small or zero remaining balance depending on the week’s free allowance.

Editing an image spends the same Imagine pool as generating one. A photo-edit session that produces several variants will hit the cap faster than a single chat answer. Grok image generation covers the edit flow. The API is a different meter: image calls bill per image on the Imagine API, not against your consumer daily counter.

Video limits

Video is the expensive action. Imagine Video 1.5 on the API is $0.08 per second, so a longer clip costs more there. On consumer plans, the constraint is usually a count of clips, a maximum length, and a maximum resolution. The Lite report specified 480p and six seconds. Plus is the plan whose public description says 1080p. A search for grok ai video generator free unlimited is asking for the API price to be zero and the consumer counter to be infinite. What a limit message is not

• It is not a reason to install a random “limit remover” extension. Those are not xAI software.

How to see your own cap

Open Grok, start the action that matters (a chat, an image, a video), and read the notice if it stops. Then open the plan screen and read the tier name. Compare that name with the columns on x.ai/pricing. If you are already on Plus or Heavy and still blocked, the block is either a short rolling window or a policy refusal. A rolling window clears. A policy refusal does not clear because you upgraded.

A week of normal use

A practical way to learn your cap is to log one day, not to hunt a leaked quota table. Note the plan name, how many chats you sent, how many images Imagine returned, and whether a video attempt was refused. The next morning, see what reset. Free accounts often get a daily window. Paid accounts often get a larger window that still ends. If nothing resets and the notice names the plan, you are looking at a monthly pool or a hard feature lock, and the price guide is the next page, not a forum thread about a secret model.

Teams hit a different wall. Five people on one login share one meter and one ban risk. xAI’s Business column exists so seats are separate. If a class or a newsroom is sharing a password, the limit you feel is the least of the problems. Split the seats, or accept that the free tier will look “broken” by lunch.

API usage does not draw down the consumer chat balloon. A developer can burn API dollars on grok-imagine-video-1.5 at $0.08 a second and still have a full free chat allowance, or the reverse. When a script fails, read whether the error is HTTP 429 from the API or a sentence inside the Grok app. Those are different counters, different invoices, and different fixes.
