Grok Image Generation and Editing
Grok Imagine generates still images from text and edits a source photo with a prompt. SuperGrok is the consumer plan that lists image generation. The free allowance is limited.

Grok image generation, grok image editing, grok edit image, can grok edit images, and can grok generate images all point at Imagine’s still-image tools. Video is the sibling feature and has its own page: Grok video. Use this page when the output should be a picture.
Generate a still
Open Imagine after you sign in, choose image, and write the subject, the medium, and the framing. “A graphite pencil sketch of a harbor crane, square, no text” beats “make something cool.” The model is good at style words and weak at exact rendered words inside the picture. If you need a headline in the image, plan to add it in a layout tool afterward. Grok created images stay in the Imagine library so you can animate one later with image-to-video.
Grok image to image and grok imagine image mean a source plus an instruction: keep this composition, change the coat to cobalt, do not move the horizon. The Imagine API documents edits with one to three reference images. The consumer photo-edit entry people bookmark is the Imagine photo-edit template. Can Grok edit images: yes, in that flow. It is an edit, not a layer-based Photoshop file. You get a new raster image.
Plans and the free image question
On x.ai/pricing, image generation (Imagine) is a row on the comparison, and SuperGrok’s feature list includes image and video generation. SuperGrok Plus raises usage. The free plan is $0 with limits and does not advertise a large image bundle. Grok image free therefore means “try the remaining free balance,” not “images are unlimited.” When the balance is empty, chat can still work. That split is explained in Grok limits.
API image calls are billed per image, separate from the consumer meter. Use the API when you need a key and a repeatable call. Use the app when you are making one picture. Do not paste an API key into a browser extension you do not trust.
Refusals versus limits
If generation stops with a quota notice, wait or change plan. If it stops with a policy notice, the request is outside the rules for your content setting. Adult allowances are an age-gated control covered, without explicit prompts, in the content settings guide. A refusal that cites minors, copyrighted characters you do not have rights to, or a real person’s likeness used deceptively will not clear because you switched personality to Unhinged.
A practical edit loop
- Start from a photo you shot or a still Imagine already made for you.
- Ask for one change per pass. Stacked changes (“new background, new face, new season, add a logo”) fall apart.
- Check hands, type, and straight lines before you animate the still into a video.
- If the edit drifts, restate what must stay: identity, crop, and the objects you did not mention.
The list above is the whole loop. Imagine is not a design system, and “grok design” as a search usually means people want a picture that looks designed. You still have to specify layout. For a logo file of the Grok brand itself, go to the logo guide. This tool should not be used to forge the xAI mark.
Rights, likeness, and text in the picture
Generate from a description you are allowed to use. A photo of a stranger, a frame from a film, or a logo you do not own is a bad source image even if the edit “works.” The tool does not check your license. Imagine is also unreliable at drawing exact words. If the picture needs a headline, leave a blank area and set type in a layout app. Fighting the model for a six-word slogan burns the image allowance and still looks wrong.
Keep a short record of prompts that worked: subject, light, lens, what you forbade. The next session starts colder than you expect, especially in a new thread. Reusing the still as the first frame of a video is the clean handoff. Do not expect the video pass to fix a broken hand or a melted sign. Repair the still first, one change at a time, then animate.
If you are comparing Grok with another image product, compare the plan you would actually buy. SuperGrok at $30 lists image and video. Plus at $100 is the tier that names 1080p for video, which matters when the still exists only to become a clip. A free account is a test, not a production queue. When the test refuses for policy rather than quota, read the content settings page and stop if the refusal is about a minor or a real person used deceptively.
Save the still you will actually use, and delete test frames you would not show. Imagine libraries fill up, and a later video pass is easier when the source is obvious. Name files by subject, not by “final-final.” If you move the still into a design tool, keep the prompt beside it so you can regenerate a cousin image without starting from memory. Regeneration spends the meter again. Batch the variants you need in one session, then stop. A second session tomorrow is a new roll of the same prompt, not a guaranteed match, which is another reason to edit the kept still instead of hoping the next generate clones it.
Questions
Can Grok generate images?
Yes, in Imagine. SuperGrok lists image generation. Free accounts get a limited balance, not an open meter.
Can Grok edit images?
Yes. Provide a source image and a text instruction. The API accepts up to three reference images for an edit. The result is a new picture, not a layered project file.
Why can I chat but not generate an image?
Chat and Imagine use different allowances. An empty image balance does not mean your account is logged out.
Does Grok Imagine include video?
Video is a separate Imagine mode. Short clips, audio, and plan caps are covered in the video guide.
