Grok Ani and AI Companions
Ani is an animated companion inside the Grok app, with a voice and a fixed character. It is optional, separate from the main Grok chat, and built for adults.
Updated 2026-09-25
Grok Ani, Grok AI companions, and ani AI chatbot refer to a character mode xAI added to the Grok app. Press coverage in 2025 described Ani as an anime-style companion with a flirtatious tone, next to a red panda named Rudi and, later, a character named Valentine. This page explains what that product is and where it sits. It does not write roleplay, sexual prompts, or instructions for explicit images. If you are under 18, do not use companion mode.
What Ani is
Ani is not a second account and not a model you download. It is a personality with an animated avatar and a voice, opened from the companions area after you sign in to the official app. “Grok waifu mode” and “AI companion grok” are nicknames searchers use for this feature. The in-app name is Ani. You opt in. The default Grok chat does not become Ani unless you open that mode.
The Independent and other outlets reported that companions were gated behind a setting, with a harsher variant of the panda left off until the user enabled it. Treat that as the pattern: character modes are switches, not the base assistant. App updates have added text chat beside the voice, and have changed outfits and entry points. The current app is the list. A screenshot from a forum is not.
The other two
Valentine is the romantic-style companion people search as an AI boyfriend. Rudi is the red panda, including a ruder opt-in variant often spelled Rudy. They share the companion area with Ani and they do not share a single personality. Switching characters starts a different voice and a different tone. Your plan limits still apply. A companion session is not a free unlimited lane around SuperGrok.
Memory and history
Companion voice chats can be transcribed into your chat list, according to user reports and app release notes that added text alongside the avatars. General Grok memory is a separate toggle, often under data controls, named along the lines of personalizing Grok with conversation history. Turn it on only if you want later chats to use earlier ones. Turn it off on a shared device. Companions are a poor place to store passwords, addresses, or anything you would not want replayed.
Age, tone, and safety
Ani’s tone is adult. Coverage of the feature included criticism that the character design looked young. That criticism is a reason to be strict, not a reason to look for a workaround. Sexual content involving minors is illegal. This site will not explain how to steer any Grok mode in that direction. xAI’s filters are supposed to refuse it. If you see the product fail that test, stop and report it to xAI rather than posting a method.
Adult language and flirtation, when the mode allows them, are still not a content-setting bypass and not Unhinged mode. Those are separate controls. Paying for SuperGrok may be required for companions in some app versions and regions. The paywall in your app is the fact. Early reports disagreed on whether companions were free, iOS-only, or SuperGrok-only, because the gating changed. Look at the button in the current build.
What this site does not host
There is no Ani chat here, no avatar, and no login. Open the official Grok app from the store listed in the download guide. If the companions entry is missing, update the app and check region availability. A repackaged APK that promises “Ani unlocked” is the same risk as any other unofficial Grok build.
Decide before you opt in
Open Ani only on an account you control, on a device minors do not use, with history set the way you intend. The character is built to be personal. That is also why a shared iPad is a bad home for it. Read the data control that personalizes Grok from past chats, and turn it off if you do not want a later work chat to echo a companion session. Transcripts in the chat list are easy to forget until someone else scrolls.
Compare the three characters before you subscribe for one of them. Ani is the anime-style adult companion. Valentine is the romantic-style counterpart. Rudi is the panda. Some builds charge via SuperGrok for the whole companion area, not per character. Look at the price on the button and match it to the plan guide so you know whether you are buying $30, $100, or a short trial. Do not pay a third-party site that says it can “add Ani” to a free APK.
If the mode conflicts with what you need Grok for, close it and use a normal thread for files, translation, and code. Companion tone is a liability in those jobs. The learning path starts in normal chat on purpose. Ani is optional color, not the core product, and it never relaxes the rule against sexual content involving minors.
If Ani is the only reason you installed Grok, still learn the off switch before you learn the greetings. Close the mode, confirm a normal chat no longer uses that voice, and confirm a new thread stays plain. That check matters on a phone that also holds work mail. The character is optional each session. It should not be optional only in theory. Update notes sometimes move the close button. Finding it once, while you are calm, is cheaper than finding it after a transcript you did not want.
